A year at the Market Place, three years at Parsonwood hill then back to the Market place for the final 2 years. I still don’t have a clue why they had it like that!!!!!!!
After a fairly easy time (inside the classroom) with Miss Garnham I didn’t like Mrs Jackson to begin with. I was constantly given a hard time about my handwriting which she once described “as if a spider has jumped into a pot of ink then crawled all over a sheet of paper”. It was the same old story as it had been since day one.
This was the year that the school gave everyone eye tests and I failed and had to wear glasses. I remember hating the school nurse anyway because she spoke to you as if you was 4 years old.I wore them for a couple of years then never again.
Outside of the classroom I had a far easier time with bullying but this was due to events that were unfolding outside of school and not the teachers ability to deal with the problem. More details in the social life section...................
I hated the market place school building with it’s old musty smell and high windows that gave the classrooms a horrible dark feeling. I hated being confined to a small playground at break times instead of the massive field they had at Parsonwood Hill. The above picture was taken several years after the school closed and turned into a day nursery.
We still had to use Parsonwood Hill school sometimes usually for physical education, we all hated having to walk down there on Friday afternoons so we could play football. I also remember the teacher Mr Beebe who always took us down was absolutely horrible I was glad I never had him inside the classroom.
On the subject of sport I was always useless, last to be picked for football teams and being described as “having 2 left feet”. However one day we were made to do a long distance run and I surprised everyone by coming second in our school year. I was chosen (1 of 4) to represent our school at a weekend cross country run at Braunstone park and did the same the following year.
I remember being proud of what I did and finally finding something that I was good at. However at school I always felt that unless you were good at football you never got noticed when it came to sport. I not saying that I would have been in an olympic final but I could have got somewhere if I had been given the proper guidance back then.
