MELBOURNE - AUSTRALIA
It took a few days before I started to find my feet on the other side of the world on my own. Hostel life quickly became very social but there were a few oddballs within the hundreds of people who were there. One person in my dorm room did nothing but sleep the whole time I was there. Once he asked me the time and when I told him he replied "day or night" !!!!!!!!
Melbourne was a great city and is still one of my favourite cities in the world. That 10 days quickly turned into one big non-stop party. I always seemed to make friends with the biggest party animals. Most of it was in the bar next door to the hostel but we would also go out around the city.
I didn't see as much of Melbourne as I would have liked to, it seemed to be party all night and sleep all day. Most of the pictures I took were of me and some random person I had met drinking!!!! Looking back I could have done this a lot closer to home in Europe.
On the other hand I always felt that life had dealt me a bad hand when it come to foreign holidays. 1999 in Rhodes was a complete joke and 2001 round Europe I had spent a lot of it arguing with people. Only Ibiza in 2000 had measured up to what I expected so I was making up for what I considered to be lost time.
I also learned a lot about the basics of solo travel from the many people that I spoke to which helped a lot for the rest of the trip and for future trips. One thing I did on this trip which I didn't do later on was stay in places for anything up to a week. It took 10 days to drag myself away from Melbourne and down to Hobart.
Some of the people I met while there I kept in contact with until after the trip was over. One of them was Will from Canada (pictured above). He later went to Thailand but broke his leg in a road accident and had to go home straight after. However the day he got back home the town he was staying in got wiped off the map by the boxing day tsumani.
That's what you call a lucky escape !!!!!!!!!!!!!
