SOUTH EAST ASIA - INTRODUCTION

After arriving back from Australia the plan was to save up a few years, get a working holiday visa for Australia and/or New Zealand then go on a big round the world trip. For the first 6 months things were going fine but then my boss sold the company.

Working for the new owners quickly turned into my worst nightmare and by the start of 2006 I was out of there. I had enough money to travel but not enough to do what I had previously wanted. So the plan was to travel just to South East Asia which was by far the cheapest section of a world trip.

This time I wanted to see more of the countries I was visiting and not just the inside of pubs and hostel bars. However the last third of the time I would be away would be at the same time as the world cup.

With this in mind and knowing full well I would be glued to the TV screens in the local bars I planned to start in Singapore, go through Malaysia towards Thailand doing a side trip to Borneo on the way. As I would be in Thailand longer than a month I would have to do a visa run into another country like Laos or Cambodia.
I would spend the last few weeks watching the world cup, Thailand looked like it would be the best place.

This time I was a lot more prepared, I had read lots on the internet I had a rough (but not exact) route plan and most of all I had invested in a guide book.

I had to wait a few weeks to get my injections but then I was off again. I took the exact same flight as I had taken to Australia, only it was about two thirds the distance. The first time it had been like a big adventure but this time it was just going through the motions...........
