"Spend a couple of nights in Bangkok at the most then get out of there"
That was the advice I had been given lots of times by other travelers. I was a bag of nerves on arrival so I stayed well out of the way in the north of the city. After a couple of uneventful days I moved hostels and found what was to be one of my favourite accommodation places. It was a bit out of the way of the main backpackers area and the tourist attractions but also out the way of the hassle. I soon got to like Bangkok.........
One of the travelers I met there was from south Africa and was about 7 feet tall. He had a few funny looks of the locals when we went to explore the city.
One of the people we met in the hostel was Thai but living in New Zealand. He had returned to his homeland to visit family. He also showed us parts of the city that most tourists don't usually get to see. I noticed that when with him we hardly ever got hassled by anyone.
One market in the north of the city didn't have a single other tourist there. It was complete with live snakes in buckets!!!!!!
They take the monarchy very seriously in Thailand. When the Thai royal anthem plays everyone stops what they are doing in the street and stands to attention. Obviously this does not happen in the city center.
A couple of nights we went out down the famous Khaosan road. The street seems to be one of those "you love it or hate it" places. For me I think it's good for the nightlife but the last place I would want to spend daytimes.
At this point in the trip I had to do a visa run. As I was only allowed 30 days in the country at a time I would have to leave the country then re enter. The 2 options were Laos or Cambodia, I got a return ticket to Siem Reap in Cambodia..........
