Before catching the ferry from Bali to Lombok I had a couple of nights in the port town of Padang Bai. During the day there was little to do so I went exploring some of the local villages on foot.
At night the place was very laid back, you could just walk into one of several Bob Marley themed bars and make instant friends. Padang Bai was not bad for a couple of days.
Got the boat across and ended up staying in Senggigi, my reasonable accommodation was very low in cost even by the standards of the country. I was expecting the owners to be pestering me to buy tours or overpriced food but there was none of that.
The mystery of why my room was so cheap was finally solved when I was woken up before 5:am by 2 very local mosques. Then again that had to be expected in that part of the world.
I didn't think a lot to the town, the place was full of touts pestering a handful of tourists. There was a few bars open at night by they were mostly empty unlike in Padang Bai.
Got the speedboat to Gili Trawangan a small island that you can walk round in less than 2 hours. No cars on the island and the only "roads" are tracks. It was from here I booked the boat trip to Komodo, there was not a lot to do in the day if your not a beach or water person but I had to hang around for several days for the boat.
The nightlife was ok, I found out there was no police on the islands and magic mushroom were openly on sale (not my thing). I got talking to a couple from Canada and it took me a while to figure out why something was not right about them!!!!!
Caught up on the football that I missed out on in the rugby mad countries of New Zealand and Samoa, met a few people.
Not a bad place...........
