HONG KONG - PART 1

As expected Hong Kong had that ultra modern look when going through the airport and onto the train into town. Didn't arrive until late and discovered that the place I was staying had a lift AFTER walking to the 13th floor with my backpack.

I quickly discovered that my accommodation was a rough place. For what I paid for a spotless dorm room on mainland China got me the lowest of the low in Hong Kong. That first night the air con had been turned down so low that I was shivering with cold all night. I ended up with 3 layers of clothing on in the end as there was no way to turn it off.

With it raining hard the following morning I was stuck indoors for a bit too long. I headed up to Victoria peak after the weather cleared and got some great views of the skyline. I also walked a fair distance around a path at the top.

Apart from that afternoon my impressions of Hong Kong at that point were not good. As well as costing a lot more than the mainland, the street were narrower and the buildings were taller giving it a horrible claustrophobic feel. The area I was staying was full of dodgy looking people hanging around the streets at night and full of Indians pestering the most unlikely of people to buy a suit during the day.

Had I not had 2 people to visit in Hong Kong I would probably been making onward plans within 3 days. The good news was that both of them lived a long way from the city center and I was going to spending the rest of my time out in the countryside.
