MOALBOAL - PHILIPPINES

After Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao and then Cebu city it was good to get out and into the countryside. Headed down to Moalboal, the island seemed like Samoa (loads of churches, palm trees and friendly people) combined with a bit of the roughness of Indonesia.

On the bus a man suddenly got on and started talking to everyone, I couldn't understand the language and it was over 5 minutes before he got out what was obviously a copy of the bible but I knew instantly by his body language and the way he was pleading with people to accept his point of view that he was a preacher. When the predictable donation bag came round I dumped a load of useless Macao coins on him........

Cebu to Moalboal cost a few pennies over a pound for nearly 55 miles. So when some tricycle taxi wanted the same for taking me 2 miles down the road to Panagsama beach I told him where to go and walked. The driver instantly knocked 50% off the price but it was too late for my zero tolerance attitude to people who try and rip me off. Checked into Moalboal backpackers which was one of only two proper backpackers I visited in the whole country. It was owned by a very friendly and helpful German.

The first full day there I hired a push bike and explored most of the villages within 8 miles. Just like in Samoa and Indonesia all the locals were shouting hello and waving. Got a red patch on the top of my arm where I missed it with the sunscreen. At night I checked out the local bars and spent the evening listening to the pros and cons of living here by 2 blokes from London.

On the Saturday I had an easy day, to be honest if you are not into beaches and water activities like myself then you are going to be struggling to find something to do.

Saturday night in the village is party night and all the locals from miles around join in. I went there with a few other tourists but we were outnumbered 20 to 1 by local people. It was a great night and the people were outstanding.

On the final day I went back to Cebu city to find a bank and was walking around all day trying to find one that would take my debit card. A bit of a wasted day!!!!!!
