There were a few things that I didn't get while in Costa Rica, the first was being in a supermarket queue with just 3 people in front of you but still waiting over 15 minutes to get served. The second was having 3 buses a day going from one destination to another with 2 of them leaving within 45 minutes of each other.
Next stop was Monteverde with a bus change (see above) on the way. I went from heat and humidity to rain and strong cold winds in the space of a day. It was probably better weather back in England which I knew was going to limit what I could do while I was there. At the accommodation I met a middle aged woman who had been traveling for over 6 years visiting over 90 countries (funded by renting property in London ). I obviously have a lot more of the world to visit yet.
The following day I attempted to climb Cerro Amigos but the trail was so steep and muddy it was impossible to get up without getting covered head to toe in mud. I soon gave up with that idea and headed back.
I then went to Santuario ecologico which was a series of walking trails.
Wildlife was a bit thin on the ground but at least I seen something and managed to grab a few hours outdoors without getting soaking wet.
At night I went out with about half a dozen others to Amigos bar which had a mix of locals and tourists. Everyone was out late even though we all had early wake ups for daytrips the following day.
The trip into the cloud forest the following day consisted of a cable car ride and a walk across a load of bridges. I missed out on the zip lines as I had done it before in Thailand and it was hardly the weather for it. The cable car ride was horrible, icy cold, windy and you couldn't even see the next tower let alone much of the forest or the wildlife. It's safe to say I picked the wrong day!!!!!
The walk was a lot better, I had a good crowd of people to speak to on the way round, the guide was good and there was plenty of monkeys close by.
I seen little point in staying longer and booking any more trips due to the weather so I headed off to La Fortuna the following day. The trip involved crossing the big lake.
The accommodation looked more like a hotel than a hostel, it was a great place to meet other travelers in the bar at night. The Canadian who I came from Monteverde (pictured at the back) with attempted to explain American football to me but I was still baffled by the end of the evening!!!!!!!!
The obvious trip to do here was Arenal volcano so I set off the following morning. There were 3 others on the trip who suddenly didn't want to do the walk because it was raining. They finally went after the guide told them there was no chance of a refund.
When we were on the walk itself they did nothing but complain because it was "all uphill". What did they expect from a volcano walk ???? Add to that a poor view from the top and that fact the guide was repeating a lot about the wildlife that I heard on the bridge walk in Monteverde it was hardly the best morning.
2 hours after getting back the sun had come out and there was a good view which was typical. I hired a mountain bike from nearby and headed up a very steep hill to Catarata. It was a killer with the heat at the best of times but the road also changed to a stoney track every few hundred meters. That was me done for the rest of the day. At night a big group of us went out for a meal.
The final day I walked out of town to Ecocentro Danaus it was only a small place and I managed to see a sloth but it was so well hidden the picture didn't turn out very well.
After all that I needed a rest and headed back to the coast the following day.
