The journey from Riga to Tallinn
was on a great bus with onboard entertainment, unfortunately I was sat next to
some massively overweight person who kept falling asleep then throwing his arms
around every time he woke up.
Vilnius to Riga was more touristy and more expensive, it was the same again going from Riga to Tallinn. I had a good first afternoon walk around the city and then went back to the hostel to shelter from yet more rain. The first person I was a spoke to was an old American man who seemed a little strange, this was later confirmed when he ate a massive block of chocolate ice cream for dinner on both nights I was there.
I did meet a good crowd who were
more than up for a night out, we headed to a few pubs and ended up in a half pub
half club place called shooters where most people end up. A good night was had
by most of us. I did get a bit of a shock when leaving as it was daylight at
around 3:30AM, I forgot how far north we actually were!!!!!!
The following morning I chose not
to do the guided walking tour as someone from the hostel was keen on joining me
for the exploring the city. We did cover some parts of the city I did the
previous day but I was ok with that, after exploring the city walls we spent
about an hour in a museum. After coming out it was raining very heavy so it was
back to the hostel to shelter.
Before we went out drinking we
stopped at a medieval themed eating place, it was touristy and overpriced but
since I don’t often eat at places like that I didn’t mind.
The Friday night was effectively
my last proper night out of the trip as I had an early wake up call on Sunday
morning. We went several bars around town but it quickly became obvious that
shooters where we had spent the previous night was the place to be so we ended
up going back. Not as late as the previous night but it was good
enough.
The final day was a make it up as
you go along type of day, I was told about Patarei prison so that was my first stop as it
was nearby. It was unlike any tourist attraction I had ever been to before.
Imagine a prison that's been abandoned for a decade or two, undisturbed with the
exception of the odd homeless person, then someone opens it as a tourist place.
Inside there was no signage at
all, nothing to tell you how old it was, famous people who were inmates there
etc. You were just walking around crumbling rooms and staircases, some people
liked it I’d had enough after about half an hour and left.
I took a steady walk to the coast but then it was back for some well needed sleep, the final night was spent in the hostel bar. It was not that lively but then again I wouldn’t feel guilty about having to leave for an early night. I headed back home the following morning.........the 3 city Baltics trip had turned out as good as I could have wished for!!!!!!!!
