The first side trip I took from Hanoi was to Sapa near the China border. I went with 2 others one from Texas the other from New Zealand. The night train was not bad but as usual I hardly got any sleep.
We met up with our guide and went on a walk of at least 10 miles through loads of stunning hills and rice fields. We were actually too guick for our guide and had to keep stopping to wait for him.
It was raining a bit so I was trying to take good pictures but also tried to keep my camera dry. It was funny seeing a woman from another group slip over in the mud as she was stupid enough to be wearing pure white.
The countryside was great but the local people were very distant and empty, just before we arrived at our homestay there was a bad incident with 2 local women which is covered in my later dated entry "the dark side of Vietnam"
The homestay was good but the people who lived there couldn't speak English so our guide had to translate for us. We sat around playing cards for the afternoon then the rice wine came out. We ended up getting our guide very drunk.
The puppy was only on this roofbeam for a few seconds while we took a photo............
The following morning it was more walking but this time not so far. It was still very muddy but we got back to the main town about 2 hours earlier than planned. Had a look round the town then it was back to Hanoi.........
