TO AND FROM BORACAY - PHILIPPINES

Every country has it's good and bad points and it was at this stage I started to discover the low points of the Philippines.

The ferry from Dumaguete was not running despite the fact the seas looked very calm. I got the bus to Bacolod which broke down on the way and didn't arrive until late at night. For some reason I stayed an extra night. I did look at visiting a nearby volcano on my full day there but they don't issue permits at that time of the year.

Next stop after a ferry ride was the town of Iloilo. It seemed another dull run down place and very quiet at night for a university town. My accommodation was a bit upmarket for where I usually stay but I arrived back to find a massive rat running across my bed. I went down to reception and insisted on moving rooms. I had one with a cat sitting outside it. The following morning I seen another rat running out of the kitchen area. I stuck to pre packaged coffee for breakfast and got out of there fairly quickly!!!!!

My final stop before Boracay was Kalibo, after being stuck in a nice but very empty accommodation I went a walk round the town. I found a bar with a handful of locals, got talking and ended us in there for a few hours.

Out of town there were some mangrove swamps which I got to after a long walk from the town. Very similar to the ones I had been to in Borneo but it was good to get out and do something productive.

After Boracay (covered in the next entry) it was another long drag to get to Bohol. I ended up back at Iloilo late at night and left the following morning. More ferrys not running changed one of my plans and I ended up going across Negros on the bus to the port town of San Carlos. Another evening arrival, another early morning start. Got the ferry and bus back to Cebu city where I had to walk miles to the port. After waiting ages for the ferry I finally got to the town of Tagbilaran after dark.

Travel in the Philippines involved long waiting times and a lot of dull towns to get to the good places..................
