ANGKOR WAT - CAMBODIA

Since visiting Angkok Wat I have also been to the great wall of China and the Pyramids and I can still say that Angkor is still the most impressive place I have been to. I got a 3 day pass to the area but only used it for the first 2 days as I had a bit too much sun on the second day.

The first day I too a local tricycle to the main area, it was the first time I saw fuel being stored at the side of the road in glass bottles in the heat of the sun !!!!!!!!!

The first main area I got to was big enough in itself for one whole day. There was obviously large crowds of people but they soon got spread out over a wide area. I quickly figured out that there was a lot more to see but was to far away to explore on foot.

The second visit I hired a mountain bike which if you are fit is the best way to see the area. I followed what was called the "grand circuit" on my map which was over 20 miles long. It was very hot but also very flat and easy to ride.

Angkor Thom was the first thing I found a few miles behind Angkor Wat. This sleeping local was great for getting the scale of the monument behind him.

It was not just the size of the place and the vast number of temples scattered over miles that was impressive but also the detail on the walls.

After Angkor Thom I went round miles of other smaller temples, this one pictured above with the tree roots growing around it is probably one of Cambodias most photographed sites.

The two memories of this day other than the temples were drinking 8 litres of water because of the heat and seeing 2 local children almost fighting each other over who was going to sell me a bottle.

The other one was heading back towards Siem Reap and seeing a big snake move in the grass at the side of the road. Swerving across the road I nearly had a head on with a motorbike coming the other way. There was a family of 4 crammed onto the bike!!!!!

Made it back to Siem Reap in one piece!!!!!
