I managed to find some low cost accommodation in Macau.
So I thought it would be worth doing a couple of days as a side trip from Hong Kong. The ferry was very bumpy and I was glad to get off......
With the obvious exception of the people it seemed more like being back in Europe than off the coast of China.
During the full day I had there I went on a long walking tour. This included the Ruins of St Pauls and Guia Fortress. The day was ruined a bit by a massive thunderstorm later on.
Macau is of course famous for gambling and walking around at night is what I would have imagined Las Vegas look like. I would have liked to have gone in as the only real casino I had been in at the time was the crown casino in Melbourne Australia.
The golden rule of gambling however is only bet with money you can afford to lose. As I gave up gambling the year before coming away to fund this trip and the table minimum in these casinos was roughly a day budget in my next country I was going to have to give it a miss.
In most countries on this trip I had been the wealthy foreigner in a poor country and now I was the poor backpacker in a millionaires playground. The first night a backpacker in my dorm room was bragging about how he had won big that evening. The second night he came back not looking too happy. It was a look I had seen many times back home outside the betting shop.
Giving the casinos a miss was probably a good idea after all......
