KUCHING - MALAYSIA

I often get asked what is my favourite place is in the world and the answer is that I like different places for different reasons. If I listed a top 10 then Kuching would be on it as it was my favourite place in Malaysia. After staying in some rundown accommodation is was great to find a spotless, ultra modern place complete with electronic swipe cards for the doors. The city itself seemed a bit different from the others and the waterfront was a great place to walk down in the evening.

On the first full day I went on a boat trip down the river with a bloke from Denmark who was recovering from food poisoning. The trip was a bit cheesy but we timed it perfectly as it rained for most of the day after the trip finished.

I have yet so see as much fish in one day as I did in Kuching, we went out to a seafood place at night and met 3 people. Two from France and one from Sweden and arranged to go Bako national park the following day and stay overnight.

I left my things at the hostel and just taken what I needed. The side trip to Bako is covered on the next chapter. The day after we got back the 4 of us went to the Orang utan place nearby. There was only about a dozen people there, it was only a fraction of the entrance fee compaired to Sepilok and we got a far better view of the animals.

The final day I went to the wind and fairy caves with 2 others. There was no entry fee but then there was not a single other person there. It was very slippery, full of moss, dripping water and there were loads of bats. I did go into a bit of a panic when I remembered that snakes hang out in caves to feed on bats!!!!!!

Didn't see any snakes but could have got seriously injured by the old and worn wood ladders we had to climb.

I had a great time in Kuching but it ended on a bad note. The plan was to fly to Bangkok changing flights at Kuala Lumpur. When booking the flights I allowed well over 3 hours between landing and taking off. The first flight was very late and as a result I missed my second flight. So I got on the shuttle bus and headed back in Kuala Lumpur..........................
